Workshop “Minute please!”

Cinema is a wonderful invention based on a false intuition. The Lumière brothers believed that viewers would be enthralled by stories put into images, but they were captivated by the telling details of everyday life: a tree moving in the wind in the background, a dog passing in the field does its little trick and comes out, blacksmiths shooting sparks at the camera… But as soon as they understood this, the Lumière sent their operators to the four corners of the world to film daily life on reels of about one minute.
These are the matrix gestures of cinema: choosing the right place, the right angle, making your frame and not moving. To make a minute of spectacle out of banality… sometimes by helping a little chance.
And for 120 years, we have continued to make “Lumière minutes”, against the syncopated rhythm of the films that make up the majority of the shows that teenagers watch.
Passed or not, the “Lumière minute” is the exam for apprentice filmmakers. 120 years after the beginnings of cinema, it was normal that the exercise was part of We are Filmakers’ approach.
We have selected some of our students’ “light minutes”.
We hope to add new ones as time goes by.
